Biography
With degrees in Art History and Anthropology, Nomadic French and Global Citizen photographer Aline Coquelle is always traveling the world. Coquelle has lived and worked in Central and South America, India, Europe and Africa, among other places. She loves to immerse herself in remote parts of the world to capture the essence of Humanity and Wildlife. Her photographs have been published in the most prestigious international publications and commissioned by luxury brands for marketing purposes.
Coquelle devotes her time to fine-art photography, worldwide assignments & books. Her work often supports philanthropic causes. She has mainly worked with silver film to keep the magic of old-time photography alive. She believes “saving and transcending tradition is the ultimate modernity,” and her gelatin-silver prints are sought by collectors worldwide. She now works in digital, but continues her twenty-five-year practice of using gelatin-silver film for books and shows.
Her Books with Assouline Publishers include Palm Springs Style (2005); The Polo Games (2007); Polo: The Nomadic Tribe (2009); The Italian Dream: Wine, Heritage, Soul (2016); The Spirit of Bentley (2017); Zanzibar (2020); Polo Heritage (2021), African Adventures, The Greatest Safari on Earth (2023). Her photographs have also been featured in Arabian Leopard (2022), Al-Ahsa Oasis (2022) and Red Sea: The Saudi Coast (2022). Iconic photographers Peter Beard, Don McCullin & Mirella Ricciardi are her dear friends mentors.
Since 2017, Coquelle has established her nomadic base camps in Paris and Zanzibar, Tanzania, where she learns from the local population—descendants from all parts of Africa, Arabia and Europe—new African & worldwide tales and rituals. Besides she continues photographing & documenting Polo Horsemen Culture all over the Planet. Photographing beyond geographical & social borders is her motto.
